Whitney Elizabeth Houston is a artist that was born in Newark, New Jersey on the 9th of August, 1963. Her parents are gospel stars Cissy Houston(n e Emily Lee Drinkard), and John Russell Houston Jr. Whitney's cousin Dionne Warwick sings as well. In Newark, Whitney began singing in the church choir when she was a young child. At the age 15 she joined her mother in singing background vocals on Chaka's hit Im Every Woman from 1978. Then, she performed background vocals for Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls and her mother. Her first gig was as a vocalist in the band Material. the band from New York called Material as well. It was her quality of her work as a vocalist in the band that caught the attention of several major record labels, including Arista who signed her in 1983 and where she was for the rest the duration of her career. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut single for a new artist in 1985. Songs like The Most Beautiful Love of All, How Can I Tell If You Give Love and the song Saving all My Love were all released from the album. The songs helped Houston to achieve seven US top tens which were higher than even the top tens of The Beatles. Album sold in US 3,000,000 copies, and later reached 25,000,000 copies world-wide. It earned her the first in her six Grammy Awards. The 1987 follow-up album Whitney which included the hits The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built on her success but it was her 1992 movie The Bodyguard (1992) that sealed her place as one of the most successful artists in history. The Bodyguard's performance as a film and soundtrack was not popular however, the Dolly Parton cover I Will Always Love You as well as The Bodyguard album that accompanied it topped charts around the globe for several months. That same year she was married to Bobby Brown who was a former New Edition singer. She was the sole daughter of Bobby and Bobbi Kristina Brown. They were married in March 1993.
