Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American musician, actress, and rapper. The work of Queen Latifah in film, television and music has won many accolades. This includes a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Additional Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her parents divorced at the age of Latifah was ten years old. Latifah went to Catholic school in Newark, NJ and was educated in her family's Baptist Church. Latifah refers to an Arabic word that means "delicate and kind". The cousin she had bestowed it on her in the age of eight. Always a tall girl her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a power forward for the basketball team at her high school. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz in a performance at her highschool. Latifah began beatboxing with the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah was among the founding members of the version of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the song. The singer signed Latifah and dropped her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
